Easy Asset Management with Radio Frequency Identification Technology
2026-08-06
The daily operation of public facilities and venues involve numerous pieces of equipment. Manual inventory checks are not only time-consuming and error-prone, but also make it difficult for staff to track the equipment in real time. To address these issues, the EMSD introduced a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) asset management system for the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Yau Ma Tei Theatre under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, saving the time for and improving the accuracy of inventory checks.

The system reads RFID tags attached to equipment and accessories via on-site RFID readers and instantly uploads the data to an online one-stop management platform for asset monitoring. Taking the two venues mentioned above as examples, the system can easily complete inventory checks on hundreds of items at each venue, including lighting fixtures, music stands and drapes. Clients can also access the complete information of each equipment item, such as quantity, storage location, model specifications and maintenance records, through the online platform. Movements of equipment in or out of storage rooms are logged by the system immediately, effectively preventing equipment loss due to unauthorised movements.
