MiMEP Symposium 2024
2025-05-22
The MiMEP Symposium 2024, co-organised by the Architectural Services Department and the EMSD, was held on 29 November last year, with the theme of “MiMEP and High Productivity Construction Lead the Future”. Around 800 representatives from government departments, contractors, suppliers, consultants, academic and professional institutions attended the event. The symposium featured a kaleidoscope of activities, including thematic presentations on the application of Multi-trade integrated Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MiMEP) technology and related exhibition booths, showcasing the merits of its application in new and existing buildings, infrastructure and DCSs, as well as its relevant requirements, floor area concessions and more.
In recent years, the Government has taken the lead in adopting in public works projects advanced construction technologies, such as Modular Integrated Construction (MiC), Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and MiMEP technologies, which were later extended to private projects. Compared with traditional construction methods, the MiMEP approach has shown significant improvements in construction time, quality and safety management. In view of this, the EMSD is committed to promoting the MiMEP approach, and first applied this technology in 2022 to replace the chillers for the Tai Lung Veterinary Laboratory, reducing the on-site installation processes and construction time while minimising the impact of the works on the client. We subsequently applied this technology to replace the air-handling unit at the EMSD Headquarters Building too. These successful cases have become reference models for the industry.
We will continue to share our innovative solutions and R&D achievements through various activities to facilitate exchanges and communication with the industry and stakeholders, so as to promote the high-quality development of smart E&M services together.

Experience Sharing on IoT Applications: the “Smart Wetland” Project Using GWIN
2025-05-22
On 25 October 2024, the EMSD was invited by the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong (WWF-HK) to an experience sharing session on the applications of IoT technology at the Mai Po Nature Reserve (MPNR) to introduce successful cases of GWIN applications in various public services, including the “Smart Wetland” project, subsidised by the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme.
Making use of low-cost and high-efficacy wireless IoT technology, the EMSD assisted the Environment and Ecology Bureau in implementing the “Smart Wetland” project, in order to enhance management capacity of the WWF-HK on the MPNR. As at August 2024, the EMSD completed the installation of four GWIN gateways in the MPNR and assisted in collecting data from multiple sensors in real time, enabling remote monitoring of changes in water level and quality, as well as tracking of buffalos. This not only greatly reduces the manual workload, but also facilitates the digital transformation of the WWF-HK, and thereby improving the efficiency of its work on wildlife protection and wetland conservation.

MiC / MiMEP
2025-03-28
To support the adoption of high productivity construction methods for Hong Kong's construction industry, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is committed to facilitating the implementation of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) method / Multi-trade integrated Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MiMEP) method, and providing advice and guidance to the trade on how these methods can comply with the Electricity Ordinance, Gas Safety Ordinance and Energy Efficiency (Labelling of Products) Ordinance.
The EMSD has prepared and updated the relevant guidance notes on electrical and gas installations and supply of electrical and gas appliances in buildings/developments with MiC / MiMEP method, aiming to facilitate the understanding of and compliance with the relevant requirements by MiC / MiMEP contractors, project developers, owners of MiC / MiMEP modules, private developers, electricity/gas supply companies, registered electrical contractors, registered gas contractors, etc.
